Dialysis can replace kidney function and restore quality of life. It is performed for patients who have lost their kidney function due to disease, injury, surgery, or birth defects. Dialysis can continue indefinitely, until kidney function recovery occurs, or until kidney transplant is received.
There are two types of dialysis:
Hemodialysis - Your blood is filtered outside your body, cleaned and then returned to you. This can be done at a dialysis facility.
Peritoneal dialysis - Your blood is cleaned inside your body. Special fluid is injected into your abdomen that absorbs waste from the blood and then the fluid is drained away. This type of dialysis can be done at home.
